The second generation of BMW 5 Series, known as the E28, was introduced for the 1982 model year. The E28 was available with inline four or inline six engines, and was the first BMW car to be offered with a diesel engine. The second generation 5 Series also introduced the now legendary BMW M5 in 1985. Other notable variants of the E28 5 Series included the M535i, 535is, 535i, 533i, 528i, 528e, 525i, 524td, 518i, and 520i. As was common with many BMW cars, the E28 was often used as a Race Car. Built until 1988, the E28 was replaced by the E34 5 Series.
