The beginning of Mercedes-Benz E lineage is the Mercedes W120/W121. Introduced in 1953, these cars were part of the "Ponton" series of cars alongside the W180 & W128. While the W180 and W128 were more upmarket models, the W120 and W121 were the entry level models offered by Mercedes at the time. The W120/W121 cars were powered by inline four carbureted engines. The W120 featured slightly smaller engines as well as a fractionally smaller chassis than the marginally more upmarket W121, for their slight variations, these cars are considered to be part of the same generation. Built until 1962, the W121/W120 were replaced by the W110.
