The Volkswagen EA489 Basistransporter, also commonly known as the Hormiga, was a short lived platform truck that was introduced in 1976. The EA489 was created for developing markets, with the majority of examples being produced in Mexico, where it was known as the Hormiga (Ant in spanish). These trucks featured a front mounted 1.6L engine that drove the front wheels through a 4 speed manual transmission. In certain markets, the EA489 was sold under other names such as the Mitra or Trakbayan. Production of the Volkswagen EA489 ended in 1979.
