Mercedes-Benz introduced the 380 in 1933. Also known by its designation, W22, the 380 was a luxury grand tourer available in a variety of hardtop and open top body styles. Another common name for the 380 is the 380K, althought this name was never used by Mercedes, this name is due to the supercharger (Kompressor) fitted to certain 380 cars. The 380 was fitted with a 3.8L straight eight engine and was available with an optional supercharger. As the first Mercedes to be fitted with an independent suspension, the 380 was noted for its exceptional handing and ride. The dynamic success of the 380 created a demand for more powerful cars, and in 1934, the company discontinued the 380 in favor of the Mercedes-Benz 500K. Due to its limited production time, only 154 were built.
