The 2nd generation of the Mazda RX-7 (FC chassis code) was a stout performer even with its extra weight from the extra luxury compared to the previous generation. Cars built between 1986 and 1988, also known as Series 4, were offered with two variations on the 13B two-rotor - a naturally-aspirated model giving 148hp, and a Turbo model (known as the Turbo II) with 182hp. Starting in model year 1989, the Series 5 RX-7 had updated styling with additional power, with 203hp from the uprated Turbo II two-rotor. A limited-edition model, the GTUs, offered some of the high-performance parts (brakes, chin spoiler, sport seats, bigger wheels/tires, lower ratio rear end) on a decontented base-model non-turbo — even air conditioning was optional and only dealer-added. The 2nd generation was replaced by the 3rd generation Mazda RX-7 for model year 1992.
