After a thirteen year hiatus, Chevrolet reintroduced the Malibu name for the 1997 model year. The fifth generation Malibu was still a mid-size model, but it was now an entry-level front wheel drive car available exclusively as a four door sedan. This new series of cars were powered by a selection of inline four and V6 engines. Production of the fifth generation lasted until 2005, and was replaced by the Sixth Generation Chevrolet Malibu.
