The engineers at Weissach, who were inspired by Porsche's success with the 911 GT1 at Le Mans, focused on a new prototype for the LMP1-98 program. Rather than utilizing the familiar 911-based flat-six Turbo of the GT1, this new design would feature a normally aspirated wide-angle V-10 engine - originally created in secret for the Footwork Arrows Formula 1 project.

When the FIA canceled the 1999 Le Mans Prototype class, Porsche needed a platform to recoup its considerable investment. Thus, Project Code 980 was born. The Carrera GT, a 5.5-liter prototype, was unveiled at the 2000 Paris Auto Show. The overwhelming interest in the Project 980 led Porsche to develop the concept - initially intended as a technical exercise - into a famous (some would say, infamous) supercar. Similar to the GT1 that won at Le Mans, it featured a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, enhanced with an extended engine support structure. A small, multi-plate clutch made from ceramic composites allowed the V10 to be positioned lower within the chassis, achieving a lower center of gravity compared to a flat-six engine. The final production engine was increased to 5.7 liters, generating a peak power of 612 HP at 8,000 RPM mated to a 6-Speed Manual Transmission.

All told, a mere 1,270 Porsche Carrera GT examples were produced. Today, the Carrera GT is one of the most highly coveted Supercars in Porsche’s long lineage of historically significant creations. It holds the distinction as Porsche’s last analog supercar before hybrid technology was introduced in the 918; the supercar successor to the Carrera GT. Porsche will never make anything like it again…

The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT on offer here #0720, Chassis #WP0CA29895L001331 was completed in January 2005 and is one of only 644 sold new in the United States. It wears its original GT Silver paint over a full Terracotta interior with custom tailored Carrera GT floor mats which, at the time, was an Exclusive Option.

Since its original delivery in late 2005, this GT was first registered in Delaware on March 12th, 2007. GT #0720 was driven just 1,329 miles over the course of 3 years before it had a basic service which included oil and filter change, brake servicing, and an electrical systems check. In 2011, the miles had crept up to just 1,636 when GT #0720 went in for service at Porsche Gold Coast of Jericho, New York, and had a battery replacement, drive belt replacement, cabin air filter replacement, and an oil and brake fluid change. For the next 8 years, the GT accumulated a total of 2,605 miles. In May of 2019, Porsche Gold Coast performed another service, as well as replacing the spark plugs and tires costing a grand total of $10,780.17.

After 16 years under the original owner’s stewardship, GT #0720 is sold to its second and current owner. Prior to the second owner’s acquisition, a service was completed at the dealer in Illinois in April of 2021 with the odometer sporting only 2,906 miles. Today, this Carrera GT has just 2,940 miles and benefits from Porsche’s recent trailing arm replacement recall, which totals to over $100,000 in titanium suspension work, as well as a fresh set of Michelin Cup 2 tires, and $3,250 worth of fluids changes.

Despite only putting a few careful miles on this example, it was enough to reaffirm our belief that the Carrera GT is truly the greatest of all time among analog supercars. Inimitable. This example will delight its next owner, whether admired in the garage, or experienced on the open road. As it sits GT #720 presents in nearly new condition and is an excellent opportunity to acquire an investment-grade example of Porsche’s greatest hit.

It is complete with its full Terracotta luggage set, tow hook, tire pump kit, two keys, manuals, window sticker, Carrera GT branded screwdriver which are still in their factory installed place with the carbon fiber compartment of the drivers side engine bay as well as its roadside warning triangle.
