About the model
The Ford Mustang SVT Cobra was a high-performance model that was part of the SN-99 "New Edge" Fourth Generation Mustang that continued on the preceding SN-95 SVT Cobra platform. Introduced for the 1999 model year, it featured updated exterior styling, a more powerful engine, and, for the first time, fitted to a Mustang, independent rear suspension. These cars were offered in coupe and convertible body styles and featured a range of distinct styling touches. The interior was essentially unchanged from the previous SVT Cobra, however, cloth seats were no longer available, and minor updates were made over the generation. Ford claimed that the 4.6L V-8 had 320 horsepower; however, independent tests proved it to be less. The year 2000 saw an absence of the Cobra as Ford changed the engine from the Teksid block to the Windsor Aluminium Plant block for 2001, providing more accurate performance ratings. In 2003 Ford added a supercharger and 32-valve Dual Overhead Cams on the 4.6-liter engine, raising it to 390hp, with these cars commonly known as "Terminator." The Fourth Generation Mustang was the last to feature the SVT Cobra, being replaced by the Fifth Generation Mustang and its optional performance trims.
