The Syclone is a veritable street eater, based on the GMC S15 Sonoma. GMC added special ground effects, wheels, and decals to enhance the truck’s image. Under its pretty exterior is a mustang-eating 4.3-liter Vortec V-6. What’s so special? It could be the all-wheel-drive system mated to the TH 700R4 automatic transmission or the liquid intercooled turbo pushing up to 280hp (disputed to be 330hp) and 360 lb-ft of torque. Only 2,995 of these were made in 1991 (3 in 1992).
Let’s talk performance! From a stop, 60mph hits you in 4.3 seconds, and the quarter mile passes in around 13.5 seconds.
Produced by GMC along with PAS, the same company credited with building the famed 1989 Turbo Trans Am, the Syclone spawned the 1992-1993 GMC Typhoon based on the Jimmy platform and retaining the Syclone drivetrain. The Syclone was only available in black.
Syclones have recently seen a surge in interest and collectability. Finding a stock truck for sale today is like finding a unicorn. This 2 owner truck has 97,307 verifiable miles. Syclones are only getting more valuable, and stock examples are even rarer. Here’s a stock, drivable version, truck #0455 of 2,995 made. It’s a compact little rocket now recognized as the grandfather of sports trucks, no doubt lending inspiration to the Ford Lightning, Dodge SRT-10, and a myriad of other “fast” trucks. But none were as quick as the Syclone from a red light.
In conclusion, with this 1991 GMC Syclone, you get an incredible blend of power, performance, style, and practical safety features, providing you with an unmatched driving experience. So, get ready to hit the road with confidence and style.
Truck Details:
Exterior: The paint quality from GM during this era was known to be mediocre, but this Syclone received a repaint when the original cloth tonneau and snaps were replaced with a hard bed topper before 1996. All the Syclone-specific cladding is intact. The maroon hand-painted Syclone decals are correctly positioned. The cargo area, protected by a rubber mat, shows minimal use. The newly refinished aluminum alloy wheels, with a machined and natural finish, are fitted with 245/50R16 tires with less than 2k miles on them. There are some blemishes and scuffs on the cladding and light scratches on the paint and hood. The side mirror has a noticeable scratch that has been touched up.
Interior: The all-original interior is in excellent condition, featuring black cloth, charcoal carpeting, charcoal vinyl, and gray plastic. It includes power windows and locks, all functioning and remotely controlled. The black velour bucket seats have a wide tuck and roll insert pattern with smooth bolsters and red piping, with “Syclone” embroidered on the headrests. The center console houses an oversized storage compartment, gear selector (borrowed from the Corvette), and cupholders. A two-spoke, Syclone-specific leather-wrapped ergonomic steering wheel fronts a rectangular panel with a gauge layout (borrowed from the Pontiac Sunbird Turbo). Headlight and HVAC controls flank this cluster, and to the right is an aftermarket Kenwood CD player. The headliner has been replaced and looks great. Custom Syclone monogrammed carpeted floor mats and a new Clifford Alarm System with remote start are included.
Drivetrain: The stock and original engine is fed by EFI and features an air-to-water intercooler that channels chilled air through a throttle body into the Syclone-engraved intake. The IC pump has been upgraded to always on with a newly restored IC radiator. The engine bay shows some wear on hoses, wiring, and ducting. The crossflow air pipe over the radiator is original with a minor repair near the turbo. Other improvements include a high-flow in-tank fuel pump and Kenny Bell Fuel Regulator. The only non-functioning aspect of this truck is the ABS system.
Undercarriage: The frame, axle, and suspension parts show some surface rust, as do the driveshafts (both main and short). The front suspension features independent coil springs, while the rear has leaf springs and original Bilstein shocks. The exhaust has been upgraded with an ATR 3-inch Cat-Back Stainless-Steel single tube exhaust.
Other: A full set of OEM Syclone-specific service manuals is included.
