This 1972 Buick Riviera, a two-door model with a vinyl top, was purchased (used) in 1973 by the current owner from Hayes Brothers Buick in Salt Lake City, Utah. Originally finished in Emerald Mist, it was repainted in the mid-1970s to Elkhart Green, a vibrant Corvette color of the same era.
The 455ci V8 engine has a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust system, with a factory-rated output of 250 horsepower, said to be paired with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission. The car has power-assisted front disc brakes with rear drums. The Riviera features 15″ Rally wheels with Riviera-branded center caps that are fitted with Bridgestone HR78-15 tires, which need replacement. The car comes with a 1973 dealer inventory tag (suggested retail price of $5,299) manufacturer’s literature, and a clean Utah title.
The third-generation Riviera features quad headlamps, “Sweepspear” bodyside moldings, and a boat-tail rear end. Exterior details include a vinyl roof cover, green acrylic mud flaps, and chrome bumpers. The owner notes minor imperfections, including a dings on the front and hood, and a small scrape on the behind the wheel on the rear quarter panel.
Inside, the cabin retains original cloth bench seats, engine-turned dash trim, and woodgrain door inserts. Features include what is believed to be the original AM/FM 8-track stereo, air conditioning, cruise control, an analog clock, power-adjustable front seats, and power windows. The original three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer with gauges for fuel and coolant temperature. The odometer shows 75,451 miles. The sale includes over 70 original 8-track tapes from the era.
Other than the imperfections listed above there is no notable body rust, with minimal rust on the underside, along with expected grease and oil buildup. Recent maintenance includes a new water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses, fuel pump, and master brake cylinder, fuel tank has also been flushed and coated. The original, repairable radiator is included for restoration.
