Founded in Yugoslavia, the much-maligned “Yugo” was produced in the mid-1980s. The brainchild of dodgy automotive entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin and the communist-controlled auto manufacturer Zastava, the pair tried to bring a cheap alternative to the American market, primarily comprised of inefficient sedans. Released in 1985, and despite selling almost 150,000 cars by 1992, the Yugo received scathing reviews from journalists about its poor performance and build quality; combined with a deteriorating government amid the declining Cold War, the company closed its doors in 1993.
