The Winton Motor Carriage Company, better known as Winton, was an American automotive manufacturer that was founded in 1897. Winton was established by Alexander Winton, who had created the Winton Bicycle Company, but turned his sights to the automotive world. From early runabout body styles with single-cylinder engines, Winton would go on to build a range of automobiles featuring two, four, and six cylinder engines powering a variety of open and closed body styles. Automotive production continued until 1924, when Winton decided to end automaking activities, and focused on building engines. In 1930, General Motors purchased Winton's engine company, which continued to build engines for a wide variety of uses, including locomotive engines, until 1962, when the brand was dissolved.
