The third generation of the Volkswagen Touareg was introduced in 2018. This new generation offered inline 4, V6, V8 and plug-in hybrid engines with all-wheel drive. Even though this generation of Touareg was focused on fuel efficiency it was decided not to be sold in North America. This was due to the Toureg being seen as a potential competitor to their own Volkswagen Atlas. The most notable models were the 4.0L V8 TDI twin-turbo and the 3.0L V6 Plug-in hybrid.
