The Volkswagen Super Beetle coupe was a variant of the Volkswagen Beetle Type 1, introduced in 1971. The Super Beetle had a rear-mounted, air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine and rear-wheel drive. The Super Beetle was also available in a convertible body style. The Super Beetle was the result of a significant update of the Beetle's suspension and overall size. This variant replaced the torsion bar front suspension and replaced it with MacPherson struts with coil springs. It retained the flat windscreen and the luggage area increased to 9 cu ft. Offered as a restyled version alongside the regular Beetle, sales were not as expected so the Volkswagen Super beetle was replaced by the Beetle 1303.
