Trabant was a brand of East German cars that were first introduced in 1957. These cars were built by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau, which was an East German automotive manufacturer. Trabants were inexpensive, simple cars, that were largely unchanged throughout their production run. Four models, which were more evolutions than distinct cars were built: the 500 (1957-1962), 600 (1962-1965), 601 (1965-1990), and 1.1 (1990-1991). The final evolution, the 1.1, featured a Volkswagen engine as part of a deal between Eastern and Western Germany, but by the time the model was in full production, Germany had reunified, and Trabants were deemed unnecessary, old, and antiquated, and were discontinued.
