The 1st generation Toyota Supra (A40/A50 chassis codes) was a development of the popular 2nd generation Toyota Celica - it was actually labeled as a Toyota Celica Supra. Rather than the Celica's four-cylinder engine, the Celica Supra was powered by a variety of single overhead cam inline-six engines displacing between 2.0 and 2.8 liters, powering the rear via automatic or manual transmission options. In the US, the Supra was powered by the 2.6L Inline-six (4M-E) engine until 1980 and by a 2.8L inline-six for 1981 (5M-E). Beyond the six-cylinder engine, the Supra Celica was widened and lengthened compared to the standard Celica to accomodate the extra power. In Japan, the 1st generation Supra was known as the Celica XX. The 1st generation was replaced by the 2nd generation Toyota Supra for model year 1982.
