In 1979, the third generation of the Toyota Hilux brought a popular upgrade to the model: four-wheel drive. In addition, the truck was redesigned. Six different inline four-cylinder engines were offered, and availability depended on market regions. The 1.6L (12R) and the 2.0L (18R) were again available, along with the 1.8L. Also sold were the 2.2L (20R), a new 2.4L (22R), and a unique 2.2L (L series) diesel. Toyota would also provide a three-speed automatic and four or five-speed manual transmission choices. The third generation ended in 1983 and was succeeded by the fourth generation.
