The sixth generation Toyota Celica GT would continue to be the mid-level "sports"-focused variant of the Celica line. The car came equipped with the 2.2-liter 5S-FE I4 that was used in the fifth-generation cars. The GT could also be furnished with a "sports package" (GTS in Canada) that improved handling. In 1996 Toyota commemorated 25 years of the Celica with a 25th anniversery edition. By 1998 the ST variant was discontinued leaving the GT as the only U.S. model. All models were surpassed by the final seventh-generation Celica in 1999.
