The Toyota Celica ST continued in its second generation as the entry-level option, and brother to the GT, despite being slightly less luxurious than the GT. In 1978, the ST and GT shared the same engine, the 20R 2.2L inline four cylinder. A larger 2.4L motor known as the 22R was given to the ST in 1981. In Europe, the ST featured a 1.6L I4 (2T) engine. Automatic and manual transmissions were both available. Third generation Celica sales started in 1982.
