Tomos was a motor vehicle manufacturer based out of Koper, Slovenia. It was established in 1955 by the Yugoslavian government after signing a license agreement with the Austrian based Puch motorcycle company. Over the years many motorbikes have been produced by Tomos under the common name Colibri. The company had a very long and successful run of motorbike production since they were able to adapt to market needs. These adaptations included upgrading the welding manufacturing process, and introduced chromed components in order to remain relevant in the domestic markets. It wasn’t until 1976 when Tomos were first sold in the United States. The company reached its peak popularity during this time due to the oil crisis. Their motor scooters and mopeds provided alternatives for people looking for more efficient means of transportation. Tomos had a short production run in the U.S. from the 1990s through 2019. Although Tomos does not operate out of the U.S. today, they continue subcontract, build and operate out of the original factory in Koper.
