The fifth evolution of the Excalibur was known as the Series V and debuted for the 1985 model year. The Series V was built during a period of financial difficulty for SS Automobiles, which saw the company change hands, although operations continued, albeit at a reduced rate. Initially, for the Series V, the established Roadster and Phaeton were the available body styles, but after new ownership took over, a four door Touring sedan was introduced. Power came from a GM-sourced 5.0L (305ci) V8 that was paired to an automatic transmission to send drive to the rear wheels. Production of the Series V Excalibur ended in 1990, and it wouldn't be until 1994 that the Series VI Excalibur would debut.
