The first generation of Saab 9-3 was introduced for the 1999 model year. The first generation 9-3 was offered in liftback or convertible body styles, and was powered by a range of naturally aspirated or turbocharged inline four engines. The most notable version was the 9-3 Viggen, which was a performance focused turbocharged variant. Production of the first generation 9-3 continued until 2002, when the Second Generation Saab 9-3 was unveiled.
