The Porsche Boxster S of the 986 generation was launched for model year 2000. The base model 986 had been launched in 1997. The Boxster S was introduced with a 3.2-litre engine rated at 185 kW (253 PS; 250 hp). For model year 2003, it would see some minor styling updates and a slight power increase to 191 kW (260 PS; 258 hp). Its direct successor was the Porsche Boxster S of the 987 generation introduced in 2005.
