Piaggio & C. SpA, better known as simply Piaggio, is an Italian manufacturer that builds a wide range of motorcycles and compact commercial vehicles. Originally founded in 1884 as a locomotive manufacturer, the company eventually turned to the military sector, and began building boats, as well as aeroplanes. After WW2, Piaggio saw an opportunity to enter the civilian sector by creating an inexpensive mode of transport for the Italian public. The company's search for this type of vehicle led to the creation of the now legendary Vespa scooter. While Vespa came to operate as its own brand, Piaggio also introduced a compact three wheeler known as the Ape, amongst other notable creations. The company also designed and engineered a series of microcars which were built by ACMA in France, these cars were sold under the name Vespa 400. Piaggio has continued to grow and currently controls various Italian brands such as Aprilia and Moto Guzzi.
