The second generation of Mitsubishi 3000GT was introduced for the 1994 model year. The second generation of 3000GT saw updates to the Z16A, which was the designation for the original 3000GT, and the addition of a new variant, the Z15A, which was largely similar to the Z16A, but did not feature four wheel steering. Three trim levels were offered for the second generation 3000GT (Base, SL, and VR-4), as well as three variations of the 3.0L V6 engine. While the majority of cars for this generation were built as coupes, a small amount of convertible versions known as Spyders were commissioned by Mitsubishi and built by American Specialty Cars. The most notable variants were the VR-4 Coupe and the VR-4 Spyder. Production of the second generation 3000GT lasted until 1996, when the Third Generation Mitsubishi 3000GT was introduced.
