The fourth generation Mercury Comet was introduced for the 1968 model year. In 1968, Mercury restructured their model lineup, making the Comet only available as a two door hardtop. The fourth generation Comet was powered by a range of V8 engines as well as one inline six engine. Production of the fourth generation Comet lasted until 1969. The Comet was not available for 1970, but in 1971, the Fifth Generation Mercury Comet was unveiled.
