The R170 was the first generation of Mercedes-Benz SLK. Introduced for 1997, the R170 was available with either an inline four or V6 engine. Based on a W202 C-Class chassis, the R170 SLK is a compact luxury roadster, fitted with a folding hardtop, and an available AMG model topping the range. Notable variants include the SLK200, SLK200 Kompressor, SLK230 Kompressor, SLK320 and the SLK32 AMG. Produced until 2004, the R170 was replaced by the second generation SLK, the R171.
