The R230 generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was unveiled at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, replacing the R129 for model year 2002. The first variant to be introduced was the SL350, few of which were sold, followed by the popular SL500 in 2003. The R230 underwent revisions in 2006 and 2008, and was superseded by the first variants of the new SL-Class R231 for model year 2012. Other notable variants included the SL550, SL600, SL55 AMG, SL63 AMG, SL65 AMG, and SL65 AMG Black Series.
