In 1994, Mercedes introduced the G36 AMG, as a variant of the W463 G-Class. A four-door 4x4 SUV, the G36, was an alternative to the 500 GE 6.0 AMG model. The G36's drive train was far removed from the high horsepower large displacement engines that we have come to anticipate from AMG. The model came with a 3.6-liter inline 6-cylinder powerplant with a four-speed automatic transmission, sending power to three locking differentials. Mercedes was more concerned with creating a competent off-road truck. The low production G36 AMG was discontinued in 1997.
