The Mercedes-Benz 290GD was a variant of the W461 G-Class that was introduced for the 1993 model year. This diesel-powered variant was built for fleet and military use, and was fitted with a W460 body, but a W463 chassis. These trucks were available in SUV, pickup, and panel van body styles. The 290GD was powered by Mercedes' OM602 D29 engine, which was a naturally aspirated 2.9L inline five with an output of 94hp and 142 lb ft of torque, which was sent to all four wheels via manual or automatic transmission options. In 1993, when Mercedes changed their naming system, the 290GD became known as the G290 D. Production lasted until 1997, when it was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz G290 Turbodiesel.
