The Mercedes-Benz 200D was a diesel variant of the W123 Sedan that debuted for the 1977 model year. The 200 D was powered by Mercedes' OM615.940 engine, which was a 2.0L diesel inline four that generated 55hp (Output was increased to 60hp from the 1980 model year). Drive was sent from the engine to the rear wheels via a variety of manual or automatic transmission options. Production of the W123 Mercedes-Benz 200D lasted until 1985, with a total of 378,131 examples built. The 200D model series would continue life in the next generation Mercedes-Benz E as the W124 Mercedes-Benz 200D.
