The Jeep Grand Cherokee was first introduced for the 1993 model year. The first generation of Jeep Grand Cherokee is known as the ZJ. Built using unibody construction techniques, the Grand Cherokee was a range of midsize SUVs created to be the top of the range model for the Jeep brand. The ZJ was offered with an inline four diesel engine, or inline six and V8 gasoline engine options. The Grand Cherokee ZJ was in production until 1998 when it was replaced by the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ.
