The Jaguar XK was launched for 1997 model year to replace the XJS. The first generation of XK, which is referred to as the X100, was available in two body styles, coupe or convertible, with both variations featuring 2+2 seating. The car was the first in the Jaguar line-up to use Jaguar's newly developed 32-valve V8 engine - the AJ-V8, which had a displacement of 4.0L. The standard XK, which is known as the XK8, was joined by the more powerful XKR for 1999. The XKR featured a supercharged variation of the V8 engine rated at 370 hp. The XK range received a mechanical update in 2002 with the engines in both the XK8 and XKR models being enlarged to 4.2L and gaining more power, the front headlamps were also updated by the addition of a clear lens. Near the end of production, two special edition variants were released, the XK8 4.2S and the XKR 4.2S, with both variants only available in Europe. Production of the 1st Gen Jaguar XK (X100) ended in May 2005 but several late production examples were sold as 2006 model year cars. The 1st Gen was replaced by the 2nd Gen XK.
