During the 1980s, Ford allied with ASC McLaren, allowing the performance modification company to apply its conversions to the Ford Capri and Mustang, first in 1980 with the SVO M81 and then from 1987 to 1990 in the 3rd Gen Mustangs. The McLaren modifications to the Mustang GT were primarily aesthetic, with a new body kit, rear seat removal, and Enkei wheels. The cars were also given custom leather interiors, and were mostly built in a convertible body style. The standard 5.0L V8 could be found under the hood. The McLaren options lasted only a short time, likely due to their high cost, and it is believed that 1806 examples were built.
