Ford and race engineering company McLaren collaborated in 1980 to create a limited-edition Mustang based on the Fox body platform. With rising fuel costs, Ford wanted to coerce its buyers into a more efficient muscle car. The Mustang M81 was the result of the collaboration. The vehicle had a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a four-speed transmission that produced 175 horsepower. A more muscular appearance was given to the body, and Koni components were used to stiffen the suspension. Over the course of a year, only 11 cars are thought to be produced. The vehicle ultimately failed due to a hefty price tag in a faltering economy.
