The first generation of Ford Fiesta, commonly known as the Mk1, was introduced in 1976. These new subcompact cars were offered as two door hatchbacks, or much rarer panel vans that were largely the same body, but without rear quarter windows. The Fiesta was one of Ford's first front wheel drive cars when they were first released. Inline four engines ranging from 950cc to 1.6L powered these cars, with a four speed manual as the only available transmission. A wide range of variants were available, depending on the market where the car was sold. The Decor, Sport, and Ghia were notable North American trims (Mk1 Fiesta was only offered between 1977-1980 in North America), while the S, Popular, L, and Ghia featured in Europe and worldwide. The more sought-after sporty variants of the Mk1 Fiesta were the Supersport and XR2. Production of the Mk1 Ford Fiesta continued until 1983, when the Mk2 Ford Fiesta debuted.
