For the 2011 model year, the fifth generation of the Ford Explorer was introduced with a very different redesign. This marked the first time the car was built as a crossover (D4 platform). The new platform was a front-engine with front or four-wheel drive. A new interior accommodated the new style, along with a raft of new engine options. A 2.0L inline-four and a turbo 2.3L inline four were offered, along with a naturally aspirated or twin-turbocharged version of a 3.5 liter V6. The fifth generation ended in 2019 and was followed up by the sixth generation in 2020.
