The third generation of the Ford Explorer began for the 2002 model year. The SUV was given a modest redesign. This time around, the two-door model would not be offered. However, all-wheel-drive along with a new 4.6 liter V8 engine would be offered. The now timeless Cologne V6 was still available. Both a five-speed automatic and manual transmissions were options as well. The 3rd generation lasted only until 2005 when it was followed by a fourth generation renewal in 2006.
