The third generation of Ford Econoline debuted for the 1975 model year. The third generation not only saw updated styling, but it received an entirely new platform as well as new body-on-frame construction. Alongside the popular passenger and cargo van variants, a wide range of vehicles such as ambulances and buses were built on cutaway chassis. A variety of front mounted inline six and V8 engines were offered on the third generation Econoline, which was built until 1991 and replaced by the Fourth Generation Ford Econoline.
