The first generation of Dodge Durango was introduced for the 1998 model year. These new mid-sized SUVs were the spiritual successors to the Dodge Ramcharger, and were built in rear wheel drive and all wheel drive versions. The base engine offering was a 3.9L V6, but three optional V8s were available, with all engines being paired to an automatic transmission. Trim levels included the SLT, SXT, Sport, and R/T. The most notable variant was the high performance Shelby SP360. Production of the 1st Gen Durango lasted until 2003, when it was replaced by the Second Generation Dodge Durango.
