The 44 was introduced by DAF in 1966. This rear wheel drive car was available as a 2 door coupe or familiar station wagon. Its continuously variable automatic transmission was innovative for its time because it did not required traditional gears and offered a smooth ride. The 44 had a 844cc flat two engine in its base model, but in the Luxe more sporty variation its engine was a 1.0L flat two. The DAF 44 was produced until 1975.
