The Chrysler TC by Maserati was a production collaboration between Chrysler and Maserati resulting from a friendship that began at Ford between two legends of the automotive industry Lee Iacocca, then head of Chrysler, and Alejandro de Tomaso, owner of Maserati. Their collaboration resulted in the "TC" or Turbocharged Coupe for the '89 through '91 model years, the car was a grand tourer. The TC came as a convertible with a removable hard top and looked like the Chrysler LeBaron. The first-year cars came with the Turbo II engine, a 2.2L inline-four turbocharged and intercooled powerplant paired to a three-speed automatic. For 1990-91 a Mitsubishi V6 with a four-speed automatic was utilized. Five hundred examples of the TC were built with a 2.2L turbocharged engine called a "Maserati" engine, however parts came from all over the world to assemble the motor. It also came with a five-speed manual transmission. All TCs were front-wheel-drive. The collaboration was a disaster for Chrysler; with only 7300 being built, the car was far too expensive to produce.
