Prior to 1961, the Chrysler Newport name had been used for two door hardtops available on the Chrysler New Yorker and Chrysler Windsor, as well as a brief stint on the Newport Phaeton show car. Starting in the 1961 model year, the Newport became an independent model of entry-level cars. The first generation Newport was available in a wide range of body styles, including two or four door hardtop, sedan, convertible, and Town & Country station wagon. A choice of three V8 engine options were available (5.9L, 6.3L, 6.8L) before the end of production in 1964. The first generation Newport was replaced by the Second Generation Chrysler Newport.
