The Bricklin SV-1 was a series of sports cars that debuted for the 1974 model year. The SV-1 was offered in a wedge-shaped coupe body style that was built from a composite and featured gullwing doors. While created with the intention of being a sporty car, the SV-1 was built with safety in mind, with well-defined bumpers, a steel perimeter frame, and an integrated roll-structure. These safety features contributed to the cars unabbreviated name, the Safety Vehicle One. For the first year of production, the SV-1 was powered by an AMC-sourced 360 cubic inch V8, which generated 220hp, but for 1975 and 1976, a Ford-sourced 351 cubic inch V8 was used, although it only generated 175hp. A 3 speed automatic transmission was available for all production years, with 1974 being the only year a 4 speed manual was available, with all transmission options sending drive to the rear wheels. Production of the Bricklin SV-1 largely took place between 1974 and 1975, with a handful of late production cars built for 1976. A total of 2,854 examples of the SV-1 were manufactured.
