The first generation of Audi A8 is known as the D2, as it was built on Volkswagen's D2 platform. Introduced for the 1995 model year, the A8 was a series of full size luxury sedans available in short or long (A8L) wheelbases. The first generation A8 was offered with a range of V6, V8, and W12 engines, and included the notable S8 performance variant. Production of the A8 (D2) ended in 2002, although S8 production continued until 2003.
