The first generation of the Audi A4 was known as the B5. This first generation of A4 was offered as a sedan or 'Avant' station wagon, and was fitted with a range of naturally aspirated and turbocharged inline four and V6 engines. The notable Audi S4 and RS4 featured in this generation of A4. In 1999, the B5 Audi A4 received a mechanical and stlying facelift. Production of the Audi A4 ended in 2001, although the first generation S4 was offered until 2002. The B5 Audi A4 was replaced by the B6 Audi A4.
