Monterey Car Week 2023

We saw almost $400M in collector cars cross the block at the Monterey Auctions this year – resulting in the 2nd biggest year for the event in its history. 2023 results came short of beating last year’s impressive $470M total, showing that the market plateau that we’ve been seeing all year in the low-to-mid-range value tiers has finally caught up to the high end of the market.

The cooling forces in the collector car market finally reached the auctions in Monterey as buyers complained about too many cars, plus time-consuming venue logistics that taxed focus throughout the week leading up to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Aug. 20 in Carmel, California.

The 2023 Monterey Car Week auctions concluded Saturday with the second-highest total in history. That’s an impressive top-line statement to be sure, though the numbers put more detail to what’s happening. We’ve observed a cooling market for the past 14 months, and in Monterey we finally witnessed that trend touch the highest echelons of the collector car world.
