The fourth generation of Volkswagen Golf was introduced in 1998. Known as the Mark 4 (Mk4), the fourth generation Golf saw the model move upmarket, with higher quality materials and finish. Largely powered by inline 4 and VR6 engines, the Mk4 Golf featured the GTI and the R32 as notable variants. Although the fifth generation Mk5 Golf was introduced in 2004, the Mk4 Golf remained in production in various developing markets until 2010.
