Volkswagen introduced the third generation of the Type 2 in 1979. Known as the T3, the third generation Type 2 was known as the Vanagon in the Americas, and the name has become synonymous with the T3 Type 2. Available in a variety of interior layouts and body styles, including the Westfalia Camper, the T3 generation would be the last Type 2 generation to feature a rear mounted engine. The T3 was produced until 1992, although the fourth generation T4 Type 2 was introduced in 1990.
