One of the rarest variants of the Volkswagen Type 2 is the single cab pick up. As part of a domestic market protectionist measure from the American government, light trucks such as Panel vans and pickups in the Volkswagens case, were highly taxed (known as the chicken tax) so imports were downsized. Very sought after because of its rarity, the Volkswagen Type 2 T1 single cab pickup was powered by different flat-four engines, driving the rear wheels. The T1 single cab was built until 1967 when Volkswagen introduced the T2 generation single cab pick up.
